New York City
Aside from the many things the Big Apple has to offer year round, Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer for the city. Fleet Week is May 25th-31st, which means there will be a chance to visit ships docked alongside the city and in Staten Island, and there will be a plethora of servicemen bustling about. NYC is filled with eating establishments and fun activities for every type of individual readily available at pretty much any hour of the day. While in town, you and your family may enjoy the Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade.
Washington D.C.
There is no more patriotic or memorable way to spend Memorial Day. The city is filled with a slew of monuments, commemorations, and ceremonies to honor our military men's sacrifices, such as the largest Memorial Day parade in the country and the annual concert held on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol. If you're in the mood for miles of clear water, but don't have the time or the funds for a trip to a tropical locale in the Caribbean, Catalina Island is a great alternative for you. This island has a variety of activities to enjoy from kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, golf, and gambling. If snorkeling is your activity of choice, Lover's Cove has been ranked one of the top 10 places in the world for snorkeling.
Vegas
Home of the world's largest neon sign collection and the world's tallest ferris wheel, Las Vegas has a lot to offer, if you don't find gambling, incredible food, and pool parties appealing enough. There are quite a few wallet-friendly flight and hotel deals for the long holiday weekend. Be sure to take advantage and and see all Sin City has to offer.
New Orleans
The city is already filled with an abundance of out-of-this-world eateries, but on Memorial Day weekend the city holds the 43rd annual Greek Fest, where many restaurants come together to commemorate the Hellenic heritage and culture.
Portland
Oregon is filled with natural beauty. So it would stand to reason that Memorial Day weekend should be spent outside enjoying it. Columbia River Gorge waterfall is breathtaking and be can be toured on foot or by car; either way it is an Oregon must see. The holiday also falls during Central Oregon's Beer Week, just in case you need a little hops to help you enjoy your weekend.
Chicago
Filled with architectural gems, some of the best art in the country and a spectacular skyline, Chicago offers a one-of-a-kind Memorial Day weekend experience. While you're in town, check out a Cubs game at the picturesque Wrigley Field, but prepare yourself a Chicago Dog is ketchup-free and quite addicting.
